What is Deep Tissue Massage?
Deep tissue massage is a firmer style of bodywork. Instead of staying mostly on the surface, the therapist works more slowly around tight muscles and areas that feel overused. Many people ask for it after long hours at a desk, hard training, frequent driving or a week that has left the shoulders and lower back feeling heavy.
Firm does not have to mean painful. A useful session should still allow you to breathe normally and relax into the work. If a particular area is too sensitive, say so. Pressure can be reduced or the therapist can spend more time around the surrounding muscles.
Who usually chooses it?
Before your appointment
Call ahead and confirm that deep tissue massage is available. When you arrive, tell the therapist what pressure you prefer and mention any recent injury, strong sensitivity or area you do not want worked on.
Questions people ask
Does deep tissue massage have to hurt?
No. Strong pressure can feel intense, but you should be able to communicate and ask for less pressure at any point.
Is deep tissue the same as sports massage?
They can overlap, but sports massage is usually planned around training, movement and particular muscle groups.
